At CMU, you will experience our unmatched passion for preparing fully licensed, professional, knowledgeable, and proficient secondary education teachers. With a variety of disciplines, including critical STEM areas, you pick your subject in CMU’s secondary teacher certification program. With a long history in teacher education, we’ve established an engaging student teaching program for you to observe live classrooms and gain practical experiences as you develop your own teaching style.

With a variety of community involvement activities, including student organizations, service-learning work, and study abroad opportunities, our secondary education degree will broaden your teaching perspective and help develop you into the best teacher you can be.

Secondary education students interested in obtaining the Michigan Standard Teaching Certificate must complete the Bachelor of Science in Education Degree in the desired level and appropriate content area(s), including the following:

Undergraduate International Scholarships
General Merit Based Scholarships
President’s Award
Students who receive the President’s Award scholarship​ will receive the resident (U.S.) tuition rate and save $8,928 per year if lower level or $9,144 per year if upper level (based on the 2019/2020 tuition rates for 24 credits per year). Students who meet the following requirements are eligible for the award.

Overall GPA of 3.3 or higher (on the US 4.0 scale)
Proof of English proficiency
Minimum of 24 college credit hours completed (incoming transfer students only)
There is no separate application for this award. Any student sponsored by their home country is not eligible for this award.
International Scholar Award
Incoming freshman who receive the Scholar Award will receive $4,000 per year for 4 years. Transfer students who receive the Scholar Award will receive $4,000 per year for 3 years. Students who meet the following requirements are eligible for the award.

Overall GPA of 3.0-3.29 (on the US 4.0 scale)
Proof of English proficiency
Minimum of 24 college credit hours completed (incoming transfer students only)
There is no separate application for this award. Any student sponsored by their home country is not eligible for this award.
International Opportunity Award
Incoming freshman who receive the Opportunity Award will receive $1,000 per year for 4 years. Transfer students who receive the Scholar Award will receive $1,000 per year for 3 years. Students who meet the following requirements are eligible for the award.

Overall GPA of 2.8-2.99 (on the US 4.0 scale)
Proof of English proficiency
Minimum of 24 college credit hours completed (incoming transfer students only)
There is no separate application for this award. Any student sponsored by their home country is not eligible for this award.

*Students who qualify will receive one of the above awards and will be award the largest of the scholarships in which they qualify. The above awards cannot be stacked.

Residence Life Grant for Transfer Students
Scholarship provides $2,000 per year for 3 years.

Open to new transfer students with a minimum of 12 univeristy earned credits and who choose to live on campus.

Can be renewed for up to three years by maintaining full-time enrollment and earning a minimum of 30 credit hours over each academic year. Third-year renewal requires a good academic standing and at least 60 new credits earned here at CMU.

Can be earned in addition to the President’s, Scholar, or Opportunity Award as well as Phi Theta Kappa Award.

Phi Theta Kappa Award for Transfer Students
Scholarship provides $1,000 per year for 3 years.

Available to Phi Theta Kappa members with a 3.5 cumulative GPA and a minimum of 12 transfer credits. Students can renew by maintaining full-time enrollment and earning at least 30 new CMU credits per academic year. Third-year renewal requires a minimum of a 3.0 CMU cumulative GPA and at least 60 new CMU credits.

Can be earned in addition to the President’s, Scholar, or Opportunity Award as well as Residence Life Grant.
