About program
The School of Plant Sciences is a vigorous, cutting-edge, and comprehensive academic unit of the University of Arizona, whose scientists are devoted to the study of plants, the organisms that underpin the survival of terrestrial life. Plants are fundamental to all aspects of our existence; they provide the oxygen we breathe, the nutrition we consume, the fossil fuels we utilize, and the infrastructure we inhabit. Given the growth of the human population, and the adverse effects of this growth on the environment, the importance of research and training in the Plant Sciences has never been more critical.
Faculty, postdoctoral associates, technicians, and students in the School of Plant Sciences study how plants grow, how they respond to their environment, how they evolved, how they can be manipulated to enhance their growth and quality, and their fungal, bacterial, and viral interactions. Research is carried out at various levels — from basic to applied using model plant species, commodity crops, species native to the desert southwest, as well as agents pathogenic to plants. Research activities take place in the laboratory, regulated growth environments, and in the field.
Teaching activities within the School cover a wide-ranging curriculum, designed to provide depth and breadth of knowledge to majors and non-major undergraduate students and to graduate students pursuing MS and PhD degrees. Faculty also actively participate in interdisciplinary research training groups within the University of Arizona.
Through active Extension programs and outreach activities, members of the School are responsive to the immediate needs of stakeholders in Arizona and committed to educating K-12 students about the importance of plants.
In the face of global challenges to increase the productivity and sustainability of agricultural and urban environments, especially in semi-arid regions, the School of Plant Sciences has developed a series of short- and long-term objectives to strengthen our educational, research and outreach activities.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Structure and Function; Explain the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs and their organization in the whole plant.
- Mechanisms and Responses; Explain the mechanistic basis of plant growth and development and physiological responses to biotic and abiotic factors.
- Form and Function; Describe the diversity of plant form and function.
- Trait Expression and Inheritance; Describe the expression and inheritance of traits.
- Critical Thinking; Develop critical thinking skills by evaluating information from multiple perspectives, drawing reasonable conclusions, and defending them rationally.
- Communicate the importance of plant science in addressing major challenges facing society, including examples of how plant scientists have ¿solved¿ such problems.

A secure global future depends on scientists and leaders who understand the importance of plants in sustaining environmental and human health. To address the challenges of our rapidly growing population, we need bright, dedicated, skilled, and creative people to fill emerging careers in sustainable production of food, feed, medicine, fuel, and fiber from plants.
As a Plant Sciences major, you will be prepared to make a difference on a global scale by gaining knowledge and skills in biotechnology, genomics, molecular biology, plant propagation and breeding, medicinal chemistry, and other modern approaches to 21st century agriculture. Starting in the 2020-2021 Academic Year, the Plant Science major now offers two emphases that students must choose from.
Emphasis option 1: Plant Sciences General subplan
Prepares students with a strong biological foundation through the lens of plants, while offering our students the ability to customize their specialization and future career options
Emphasis option 2: Plant Health Sciences subplan
Trains students in both biotic and abiotic factors that impact plant health, ranging from the molecular to the microscopic to the macroscopic. Professionals working in Plant Health Science apply plant, microbial, and insect sciences to predict disease epidemiology, protect plant, environment and human health, and optimize plant growth or yields.
Students can work with their acdamic and faculty advisors to customize their coursework and decide which emphasis is best for them. After completing foundation courses, all Plant Sciences majors work with their advisor and faculty mentor to customize their coursework, selecting electives to fit their career goals.
