OUR INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE Located at the heart of the De Montfort University (DMU) campus, our college offers international students an incredible opportunity to study in the UK.
De Montfort International College (DMUIC) pathway courses give you the chance to gain subject knowledge, build academic English language skills, and transfer to a full DMU
degree course upon completion.
From the moment you arrive at DMU, our careers programme can help you transform into a work-ready graduate with professional skills and experience.
DMU Works
The extensive DMU Works careers programme aims to help all DMU students become adaptable and business aware through professional experience opportunities. Students are helped to understand personal strengths and develop the skills and qualities that today’s employers are looking for.
Activities include:
Professional experience can range from a year’s placement to spending a day on site with an employer, typically in the UK or Europe.
Volunteering
Students can gain volunteering experience with our award-winning DMU Local initiative – a scheme that uses the knowledge and skills of students and staff to help the local community. Square Mile India, our expansion of this initiative, allows staff
and students to travel to Ahmedabad to make a difference to the lives of those in disadvantaged communities.
Work while studying
Whether you want a part-time job for a couple of hours a week or a full-time position for a short period, the campusbased Unitemps recruitment agency has opportunities for paid work both inside the university and in the local area.
Our students tell us that DMU is the perfect size – large enough to provide support, yet compact and friendly enough to call home. We run a range of events and services to help you settle into student life once you arrive here.
International Welcome Week
Every September we hold an International Welcome Week specially for our international students. There will be activities, day trips and entertainment – and we will be able to answer all your questions about DMU.
Student Gateway
The Student Gateway is DMU’s one-stop shop for any non-academic enquiries. Our friendly team will be able to give advice on important subjects such as careers, housing, money, welfare support and international issues.
Faith and worship
DMU welcomes students from all faiths and none, and if needed, we can help you find your religion’s community in Leicester. DMU has its own chapel as well as one of the biggest Muslim prayer rooms of any UK university. Our chaplaincy also provides a wide range of spiritual and practical support to all our students.
DMU has nine halls of residence for international students, all of which are either on or within 10 minutes’ walk of the campus. There is a choice of mixed or same-gender flats available. Flats are mostly en suite and self-catered, with shared kitchens and laundry facilities on site.
Benefits of DMU Halls of Residence:
Health and wellbeing
De Montfort Surgery is an NHS general practitioners’ surgery on the edge of campus that provides medical care for our students and some local residents. DMU also offers a confidential counselling service, giving you the opportunity to talk with someone who is impartial and separate from work, social and family life.
THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
Being a university student is not only about education, but also about
creating and developing experiences and memories on and off campus that help shape your future.
Activities
There are over 120 student groups and societies, upwards of 40 sports clubs, volunteering groups, and more. These give you the chance to make friends, learn new things, and create long-lasting memories.
Travel opportunities
There’s an international experience programme – DMU Global, which offers subsidised and affordable international travel opportunities to all DMU students so that they can enrich their studies and broaden their cultural horizons. More than 13,000 students have travelled overseas to a huge variety of destinations, including New York, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Berlin.
Health and support
The welfare of our students is always our top priority, and DMU offer a range of dedicated services to provide support when needed throughout your time here. Students have access to mental health support, counselling, disability services, and a medical centre on campus. We also run HealthyDMU – a wellbeing service that aims to help students have a healthy, happy and productive time at university and develop habits that can enrich wellbeing for years to come.
Whether you play at competition level or simply want to try out a new activity, there is a sports club for everyone at DMU.
DMU Sport provides a choice of more than 40 sports clubs, from basketball and boxing to judo, football, triathlon and snow sports – and we aim to give every student opportunities to take part in sport, whatever your ability or confidence level.
The DMU Active programme is delivered by students and offers an extensive range of free activities, such as indoor tennis, basketball, lacrosse and badminton. We also work to educate students about how to lead a fit and active lifestyle, balance sports with studies, and maintain a healthy diet.
De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU)
As a DMUIC student, you automatically become a member of De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) – an independent student-run organisation that serves the DMU community. DSU provides access to over 120 societies, over 40 sports clubs, numerous volunteering groups, and Demon Media, the De Montfort student media group – all of which give you the chance to be involved with something amazing and build memories that will last a lifetime.
