Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) is the oldest and largest university in Hungary and it is the most popular higher education institution among applicants each year. As the leading research university in Hungary, the name of ELTE means knowledge, opportunities, competition, openness and community. Meet ELTE students and take a tour with us at ELTE in the centre of Budapest. Discover new opportunities and challenge your talent. Join the community of Eötvös Loránd University.
ELTE, founded in 1635 and the longest continuously operating university of Hungary, serves the interests of high quality education and research, building upon the best European traditions. Motivated by the conviction that excellence in higher education is inconceivable without first-rate research, ELTE aims to represent both sides of the traditional concept of universitas at the best possible level: the creative community of instructors and students (universitas magistrorum et discipulorum) and the ideal of an institution actively engaged in the pursuit of various scientific and scholarly disciplines (universitas scientiarum).
A modern university with 380 year old traditions:
Over the last hundred years, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has had many world famous scientists and four Nobel Prize laureates among its teachers and alumni. The current number of students enrolled yearly has reached 33,000, and there is an academic staff of 1,800 highly-qualified teachers and researchers.
ELTE is internationally recognized and its programs are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee. The diplomas issued by Eötvös Loránd University are acknowledged worldwide and its course credits are transferable in all countries in the European Union.
Eötvös Loránd University, and the Hungarian higher education in general, takes part in the Bologna process. Accordingly, the consecutive training cycles of the higher education leading to a higher education degree are bachelor’s program (alapképzés), master’s program (mesterképzés) and doctoral program (doktori képzés). Bachelor’s and master’s courses are taught in consecutive cycles, in the form of divided training, or in cases specified by law in the form of undivided, one-tier training.
ELTE not only offers first-class education to the international community, but it is also a place where excellent research is undertaken. Research at ELTE comprises international collaborations, interdisciplinary approaches, modern laboratory infrastructure, and innovation. Our researchers run cutting-edge projects funded by the European Union and national institutions. Along with international partners, our research groups also establish strong connections with the industry.
ELTE finds it essential that students have quality help from their alma mater with forming their career besides offering them quality education.

ELTE provides you or helps you finding a suitable accommodation throughout your studies. We distinguish two accommodation services: dormitories and housing.
The Dormitory Centre, a central department, offers hundreds of high quality and affordable places and strong community in the ELTE dormitories. More than half of the international students request a dormitory place. The Housing Office, its sub-department, helps you finding an accommodation according to your individual needs by our partners on the private market including apartment houses, flats, and hostels. They are harmonized so you can apply to both services at once.
Visitors and guest teachers coming only for a short time can get discount at our partner hotels.
The library network of the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has altogether about 4.3 million documents. The University Library Service (ULS), the ELTE library network was formed in 2009 and consists of more than 50 faculty, institute, department, dormitory, and school libraries. ULS was awarded the title ’Qualified Library’ in 2018, and its governing body is the Library Council. The collections of libraries are accessible via the electronic catalogue. Libraries have their own rules, so their opening hours and services may vary and are available on their own websites.
Most of the IT services required for university life can be accessed with an IIG ID, which will guide the students’ undergraduate years, giving them access to several other interfaces, including correspondence, Teams, and ELTE Wi-Fi.
When you arrive in Hungary, make sure that you have a health insurance with you that you can use for health care services during your stay in Hungary.
If you are a non-EEA student (coming from outside of the European Economic Area), you should consider which option suits your situation the best and what are you entitled to have.
