Today Irkutsk National Research Technical University is one of the 100 best universities in Russia. Over 17 thousand students study at INRTU in 115 educational programs. Currently, the university employs 973 full-time scientific and pedagogical workers, including 109 doctors and 586 candidates of sciences. The university includes 10 institutes, 7 faculties, 2 technical schools and 1 college.
In Irkutsk, the origins of vocational and technical education are associated with the opening in 1745 of a navigation school, which in 1754 was transformed into a school of navigation and geodesy, and in 1789 was attached to the Main Public School — an educational institution of a higher level. Here they taught general education disciplines, architecture, geometry, mechanics and physics.
In 1805, the Main Public School came under the full jurisdiction of the men’s gymnasium, which was then opened in Irkutsk, whose pupils had the right to enter universities after graduation.
INRTU’s ultimate and prior goal is bringing up a new generation of specialists equipped with an array of skills and learning outcomes to succeed in continuously changing world. The University offers 88 bachelors’ programs of 4 and 5 years of duration, 54 master’s and 50 PhD’s programs in schools and departments.
Every educational program promotes open exchange of ideas and atmosphere of mutual respect and integrity. Currently, the University has 18000 Russian and foreign students enrolled in 192 high education programs and 15 vocational training courses, including 1500 full-time foreign students. Each year we train at least 150 foundation year international students, arrange summer and winter schools for more than 300 international students. In 2010, INRTU obtained a status of “National Research University”.
For more than 90 years of INRTU history the university has grown from Siberian Mining School to National Research University. Nowadays the university is developing research in technical, humanities and sciences area. The main vector of research is aimed at the region interest, especially: oil and gas mining, electricity and heat power engineering, aircraft construction, it-technologies, etc.
The INRTU’s research has real-world impact beyond academia. We are at the forefront of the search for solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems, seeking to be a global force for positive change. Its allows to cooperate successfully with large enterprises and business representatives, as well to implement our own developments. Our research is contributing new knowledge, ideas and solutions, which is leading to real change in the world and making a difference to people’s lives.
1- About 30 living rooms (triple accommodation) are along a hallway, sharing two common bathrooms, two lounge areas, and for cooking buildings — two kitchens.

The kitchens are equipped with furniture, electric stove, microwave and a set of dishes.
Bathrooms include two washers, a washing machine, a shower and a toilet. Sinks are equipped with touch taps.
The rooms have single-tier beds, a wardrobe, cabinet furniture and a refrigerator.
The pride of the university is the library. This is one of the largest collections of human knowledge of Siberia and the Far East. The fund of the library, and it is unique, has 1,192,870 units of books, scientific and technical documentation, magazines and newspapers. In its composition are almost complete sets of books of the former Academy of Geological Sciences, Russian Mineralogical Society, Mining Journal in 1825, 15 titles of major universal encyclopedias in Russian, German and English, including the latest 15th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, unique edition 1896 , the “universe and humanity”, a facsimile edition of the monument of ancient Russian culture “Ostrom Gospel” (1056-1057), “The Odyssey” by Homer in translation V. Zhukovsky, rare books on art, architecture, books with inscriptions of personal libraries with print and bookplate, facsimile collection babies, books and other rare and original edition. Since 1932, one of the few libraries receives a copy of all the mandatory surcharge published in a book on the country profile of the university. Moreover, receipt of legal deposit was not interrupted even during the harsh years of the Great Patriotic War.
All international students should have a health insurance. You can buy the health insurance by yourself or at INRTU upon arriving to Russia. Cost of health insurance is about 5000-6500 RUB per year.
Campus of INRTU is the biggest among Irkutsk universities, its territory is 480 000 square meters. It’s located in the Irkutsk city; it takes only 15 minutes to get to the city historical and business center, 10 minutes to the railway station and 30 minutes to the airport by public transportation (bus, tram, trolleybus).
The university has 23 sport teams in the sports club. The university supports the best students who are actively involved in sports and represent the university in competitions.
The university has the best stadium in the Irkutsk region with artificial turf (where athletes can be trained for serious competitions, up to the Olympic), tennis courts, sports grounds on campus territory with playgrounds and complexes of outdoor sports simulators (for self-study in the city, physical education), gyms (boxing hall, wrestling hall, gym, games room, gyms in campus dormitories) one of the best in the climbing wall, sports complex (physical culture) and health center) and FOTs (physical culture and health center).
