We’re committed to two things: excellence in teaching and excellence in research. We put student success at the heart of our mission, supporting every student from every background to achieve outstanding outcomes; preparing our students to thrive in their future lives.
Choose Essex for an education that’s focused on you. Study here for more than a great degree. Learn to value opinions that differ and develop the confidence to make your own decisions.
Sir Albert’s plans were seen as so ground-breaking that he was asked to give the BBC’s prestigious Reith Lectures in 1963, the year before we opened. The flagship lectures were a chance to explain how Essex was going to break the mould and challenge expectations about what a university could be. Sir Albert told listeners “radical innovation” would be at the heart of Essex’s approach to research and education.
Committed to transformational education
We are committed to ‘research-led’ teaching, where every Essex student has direct experience of being a researcher themselves, helping our students develop critical, analytic, and transferable skills.
We were awarded University of the Year 2018, and in 2017 we received Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework, amongst our achievements and rankings.
In 2019 we announced 100 new academic appointments, as a further commitment to enhancing the educational experience we offer to our students, while also boosting our research power.
There are lots of ways to study at Essex, from traditional lectures, seminars and tutorials, to blended learning (a mixture of face-to-face and online delivery), or even studying remotely, entirely online with our partners University of Essex Online.
Our researchers are daring, visionary thinkers, constantly asking difficult questions and providing answers that give insights into your life.
We look at issues that affect you both now and in the future – from how your online footprint affects your human rights to how we can feed the world’s growing population. Our research shapes thinking and influences policy. We’ve helped governments model the effects of their economic policies and shaped the global debate on mental health law reform.
At Essex, we are continually investing in your future. We support and encourage you to make the most of your time at university and provide you with ongoing support when you graduate.
