The University of Auckland was formally opened on 23 May 1883 as Auckland University College, part of the University of New Zealand. A disused courthouse and jail served as premises for the 95 students and four teaching staff.
Today, the University of Auckland is the largest university in New Zealand, hosting over 40,000 students on five Auckland campuses.
The University reviews its programmes and its departments and schools regularly. All new University qualifications undergo a University Review in advance of being assessed by the Committee on University Academic Programmes Graduating Year Review process.
The University of Auckland recognises research and research-led teaching as primary responsibilities of its academic staff, and values fostering, publishing and disseminating research of the highest international quality.

Our homestay hosts will provide safety and security in a well supervised environment. Share in the daily life and experiences of a New Zealand homestay host and immerse yourself in local life. All of our Auckland Homestay hosts are police checked and provide a warm, caring and safe atmosphere. Homestay is available to everyone and is compulsory if you are under the age of 18.
Residences are purpose built for students and feature single furnished en-suite rooms and studios.
Students over 18 can also choose to look for private housing by renting a flat or apartment in the local area.
The University of Auckland Library system provides environments, services, resources, tools and expertise to support learning, teaching and research.
Explore the computing and IT services available at the Information Commons, inside the Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library on the Epsom and Tai Tokerau campuses. Learn about the University IT environment, and familiarise yourself with saving, photocopying, printing and scanning by visiting IT Essentials.
The Commons provide individual workstations, printers, scanner and copiers. You can get walk-in, email and telephone support at The IC Helpdesk.

The University of Auckland is located in the heart of the city, just a short walk from Taylors College where you will study the Foundation Studies Certificate programme. You will have access to the University’s facilities from day one.
The University’s main City Campus has everything you need for study, health and leisure time, including libraries, cafés, restaurants and a fitness centre.
There are more than 200 student clubs, societies and associations where you can develop your interests and make new friends.
