Currently, the University is a flagship teachers training university of the southern region of Ukraine with 17 acknowledged scholar schools, 47 specialties for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral training programmes at 10 faculties, 4 divisions and one institute. Within the period of its existence, more than 100,000 students have graduated from the University and have been employed at the educational institutions of Ukraine; more than 30 graduates worked abroad.

At present, there are 12 academicians, almost 70 Doctors of Sciences, professors; 18 lecturers educators hold the titles of Honorary Workers of Science, Education, Arts and Sports; they are laureates of state prizes. A great number of scientists have received international awards; they are members of various national and international academies, communities and associations.

Beginning
South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K.D. Ushynsky was established as Pedagogical Institute at Richelieu Lyceum in Odessa on 2 May, 1817. Since that time, its name has been changed several times (Teacher’s Institute, Institute of Public Education, Odessa State Pedagogical Institute, South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky, South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after K.D. Ushynsky); it has been liquidated and reestablished.
Before 1941, the University was one of the biggest in Odessa in terms of the amount of students and the leading one in the USSR in terms of quality of teachers training. During the World War II, it was the only pedagogical educational institution that was relocated to Turkmen SSR where it remained till May 1945.
On February 12, 1945, Odessa State Pedagogical Institute was named after distinguished scientist-educator Kostiantyn Dmytrovych Ushynsky for his outstanding achievements in teaching.
The Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was considered to be the heart of the Pedagogical Institute, and the years of 1940-1950 were the most prominent in its scientific life.
To facilitate the development of the educational institution, I.O. Valsenko (the Rector) made a decision to form a Faculty of Physical Education specialized in teacher training. It was unique for that time but relevant and essential for the system of secondary education.
In 1970, Odessa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky was awarded the Honorary Diploma by the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukrainian SSR.
University after Independence of Ukraine
On 29 September, 1994, by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 592 and order of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine No. 270 dated 16 September, 1994, Odessa State Pedagogical Institute named after K. D. Ushynsky was reorganized into South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky.
1990s – early 2000s became the period of transformations in the structure, academic process organization, research activity; those years meant advancement to a new level of education development for the pedagogical staff. New specialties, faculties and departments were opened at the University and an impressive number of scientific conferences were held, which greatly contributed into university’s development.
In 2007, the University personnel was awarded Certificate of Appreciation of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for its considerable contribution to the development of science, training skilled specialists, fruitful research and educational activity as well as work achievements.
On 13 July, 2009, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 538, South Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after K. D. Ushynsky was assigned the status of a national university and was given its present name.

Odessa city is the third largest city in Ukraine after the nation’s capital, Kiev, and Kharkov.
Odessa is a multiethnic city. It hosts a big number of nationalities, as a result, Odessa is the most multinational city in Ukraine.
The multinational character of Odessa has influenced the architecture of public buildings, reflecting the Mediterranean style of classical architecture and in the planning of buildings and facade compositions, the Italian and French decor is felt on each step.
In 2009, the historical center of the port city of Odessa was officially listed in the preliminary World Heritage list of UNESCO.
There are many theaters and museums in Odessa, a lot of them have a long and interesting history. The Odessa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet (Opera house) is the biggest and the most famous theatre in Odessa. The building has unique and well-known architecture. In 2011 the popular magazine “Forbes” included the Odessa Opera House into a list of the most important sights in Eastern Europe.
