Research practice at the University of Sunderland is stitched into the very fabric of the institution. For almost 100 years, researchers at the University have been challenging themselves and their subject in order to improve society across all of its facets – from the early days of pharmacy to the support for heavy industry at its height, through to today’s new sciences and advanced technologies.
Over 70% of published research carried out at the University of Sunderland has been rated as either world-leading or internationally excellent in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, doubling the proportion of world-leading or internationally excellent research since the REF was last held in 2014.
Our careers and employability service, Sunderland Futures allows students to engage in person or online with employers through employer talks, employability conferences and careers fairs to ensure that they are well placed to make connections with potential employers. We offer a wide selection of experiential opportunities ranging from volunteering, work shadowing, paid projects, Student Ambassador roles, support in finding a student job, professional mentoring and the Sunderland Professional Award (SuPA) to help enhance our students’ future employment prospects.
Alternatively, if a student is a budding entrepreneur, then they may decide to run their own business alongside studying at university. There are a number of IT support desks in both campuses, so you’re never far away from the advice you need.
IT Services also provide a range of online guides on things like printing on campus, storing your files, security, software and much more.
We have a range of free and confidential support systems for all students, such as our Wellbeing service. The service offers advice on a range of issues such as stress, anxiety and low mood, self-harming behaviours, bereavement and loss, eating issues, dependency and addiction, concerns about sexuality, issues with self-esteem and confidence and long-term mental health difficulties.

Joining a club at university is a life changing experience, you’ll meet new friends, experience the rush of winning for your university, and also enjoy some great social events.
Team Sunderland have over thirty clubs to choose from, so there is something for everyone. All clubs provide weekly training sessions led by qualified coaches, transport (when required), and equipment. Some examples of the clubs available include American Football, Netball, Kickboxing, Rowing, and even an Equestrian club!
